How To Tell If You Need A Facelift

Aging can be a hard realization to face when you look at yourself in the mirror every day. If you are in your 50's, 60's, or 70's, you may start to notice more signs of aging than you ever thought possible including a loss of elasticity, fine lines and wrinkles, and even sunspots. While things like Botox and fillers are great at temporarily treating some of these aging issues, you may get to a point when you want to see more results without all of the maintenance; that's when a facelift comes into play.

What Is a Facelift?

A facelift is a surgical procedure that is designed to lift and tighten the skin on the face to give a more youthful appearance. During this surgical procedure, you will be fully under anesthesia. Once you are sedated, your surgeon will typically make incisions along the hairline (near the forehead) and behind the ears. Once the incisions have been made, your doctor will then actually lift the skin in order to pull it tighter. During this process, your surgeon may also remove excess fat and tissue in the skin.

How Can You Tell If You Need a Facelift?

A facelift isn't a surgical procedure for everyone, but if you find yourself fitting into some of the following categories then it may be for you:

  1. Botox just isn't doing the trick anymore: Botox is used to treat fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes and across the forehead, but if you are experiencing a lot of sagging around your cheeks and jawline, then Botox isn't going to be able to help.
  2. You're sick of the maintenance: Botox typically lasts anywhere from 3–6 months while fillers can last up to 18 months. Because they are temporary, they do require a lot of money and maintenance, which isn't for everyone. If you're sick of having to get things redone every few months, then a facelift may be the way to go. Although facelifts aren't permanent, they can give you back several years.
  3. You have a lot of sagging skin: Fillers are great at helping with fine lines wrinkles and a loss of volume in the skin, but if you have a ton of sagging skin, then you may either require a lot of filler (which can be expensive) or you may just need surgery. Because your facelift will lift the skin and tighten it, it will help you get a more youthful look.
